Trinidad & Tobago v USA 15/10/2008 Highlights
Trinidad & Tobago took on the USA on 15th October in what, at least in terms of population, would seem an uneven contest. Both sides were looking for three points in the CONCACAF World Cup 2010 Qualifying, though Trinidad were more in need given the USA’s unassailable lead at the head of Group 1.
Trinidad, with the help of a penalty from the evergreen Dwight Yorke, snatched this match by two goals two one.
Russell Latapy, another returned ‘retiree’, aged 40 had opened the scoring for T&T on 62 minutes, while Charlie Davis responded for the States.
The USA looked pretty terrible, in particular the overhyped prodigy Freddy Adu looked out of sorts, and was in truth ineffective against a defence which doesn’t stand up to much scrutiny. He came off after around 70 minutes.
Take nothing away from Trinidad & Tobago – on this evidence they are good value to make it to the World Cup Finals, and might even go further than the USA. However, Dwight Yorke will be 38 when the World Cup comes around: will he still be able to act as talisman? Latapy will be 42 – will he still be able to even jog?
In any case, the USA lead this Group 1 by 4 points with one match remaining. Trinidad need just a point against Cuba to finish second in the group:
