Final Whistle

Spurs have finally sacked Juande Ramos, following the worst start to their league season in living memory, and a huge crisis of confidence which seems to be running through the young Tottenham team. In his place, Tottenhmam have agreed a £5million compensation package to parachute Harry Redknapp in from Portsmouth.

Ramos began brightly with Spurs, and found himself spoilt for choice up top – with Defoe, Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov available last season. However, Defoe went in January, and Keane and Berbatov exited this summer, leaving Tottenham lighter up front than for many years – if ever.

New signings failed to bed in – particularly when Ramos began tinkering with the squad searching for a first victory – and confidence drained from the team.

Without goals, winning football matches is next to impossible.

Harry Redknapp has proved himself adept at two things with Portsmouth: assembling a great squad at bargain basement prices; and getting the best out of players who looked jaded and under-confident at other clubs. In fact, there’s only one man better at this job in Premier League football: Martin O’Neil.

Spurs, at least, seem to have made a wise decision in hiring Redknapp.

However, Harry will need to find goals, and fast, otherwise he will have a torrid time, at least until January.
