Great Goals: Dietmar Hamann Liverpool v Portsmouth 2004

Firstly two admissions:

1) I’ve been neglecting Finalwhistle.vg for the past few months, despite my somewhat optimistic claim that this would be a weekly publication, so apologies to those of you who have suddenly noticed your RSS reader or whatnot sputtering into life with this sporadic and out-of-the-blue entry!

2) I wholeheartedly and unashamedly stole this video ideao from the magnificent footie blog WhoAteAllThePies.tv who are running a “Top Ten goals of the Decade” so props to them for pricking my conscience with their much more organised and regular spoonfuls of footie blogism.

In any case, the above video is really a belter of a volley: probably the best struck I’ve seen.

As a player, a strike that sweet is rare, and even in training you’d probably be talking about it for a week or two. For it to happen in a Premier League match watched by thousands live, and on television for us to marvel at for years to come is something else. The ball from Michael Owen is inch perfect – Didi Hamann didn’t have to break stride – but oh what a hit this is.

Liverpool and Portsmouth are playing this weekend in the South of England, and we can only hope for a strike of this magnitude today. Portsmouth look like they’re pulling themselves out of the early season mire they found themselves in now under Avram Grant, while Liverpool have been all at sea this term: could well be a draw today.

As for the video… I’ve got goosebumps here, and I’m not a Liverpool man.

Hi, I'm Archie Thornton. I thought it was about time I put a bit into this section! A lot of people ask me which team I support. Funnily enough, I can't call myself a fan of any one team as I spent every Saturday from as far back as I can remember playing football not watching it - I do follow a few teams, though, usually because I know people who play for them. For example, I tend to look up the results for Sunderland, Newcastle, Hull City, Tottenham Hotspur, Man United, Liverpool and Chelsea first. Just because I haven't mentioned a team doesn't mean I dislike them either...
