Belarus v England 15/10/2008 Highlights

Have a look at the extended highlights from last night’s Belarus v England match in Group 6 (UEFA) World Cup 2010 Qualifying.

These highlights last just short of half an hour, so grab yourself a cup of tea or coffee, or a beer (depends what time it is where you are I guess!) and enjoy them. If you don’t know the score yet, don’t read on as I’m going to ruin things by reviewing this match, and all that went on further down this page.

Match Review – Belarus v England, 15th October 2008

Fabio Capello, having enjoyed a good spell of unbroken time with his squad of underachieving superstars, was able to maintain some consistency with his squad selection, making only one change to the first team and lining up with the following starting lineup:

  • GK – David James
  • RB – Wes Brown
  • CB – Rio Ferdinand
  • CB – Matthew Upson
  • LB – Wayne Bridge
  • RM – Theo Walcott
  • CM – Frank Lampard
  • CM – Gareth Barry
  • LM – Steven Gerrard
  • CF – Emile Heskey
  • CF – Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney started the match having scored three goals from two appearences and England finished the match against the Kazach’s extremely well, and could be let off a slightly rusty and lethargic start to that game if they continued that form into this match.

More importantly, England needed three points to keep the pressure on Croatia and fellow qualifying hopefuls by maintaining a 100% record in this group.

England win 3-1 – How it Went

After just 11 minutes, Steven Gerrard emphatically proved he can “do it in an England shirt too” when he scored from 30 yards. However, Pavel Sitko got an equaliser mid-way through the half, and the sides came in at 1-1.

England had shown some good stuff, though.

Emille Heskey continued his role of provider for England when, after 5 minutes of second-half football had elapsed, he crossed for Rooney to bag his first of the game, giving England the lead, 2-1.

With around 15 minutes remaining, Rooney grabbed his second – his 5th in three games – by cooly lifting the ball into the net following more great work from Gerrard.

  1. Rooney was fantastic in this match – looking really good! Its funny – he hasn’t looked this good for ages, but has been scoring of late – a little bit of confidence, and he shows how incredible he can be.

    Gerrard equally so.

  2. Thanks for this ,watching in Greece,ITV.com does not allow non UK viewers to view their live matches !!!!!!! whats that about ?

  3. I don’t know Dave – but glad you found us. We’ll be getting more English Premier League highlights hopefully this weekend too. The RSS feed is http://finalwhistle.vg/feed/ if you have a feed reader, or use iGoogle or whatever – then you get the games as they go live.

  4. Lets not forget the massive contribution Heskey makes to this team. He will never be a prolific scorer but without him England have no cutting edge. He’s a good old Leicester lad and deserves alot of praise for his performances in the last few England games he played in!!! Go on Emile my son!!!!!

  5. Heskey has impressed me massively this time around – he looks more comfortable in an England shirt now, which can only be good. The two of them are forming a proper partnership (a la Shearer & Sheringham et al).
